It was recently announced by U.S. President Donald Trump that Israel has accepted a 60-day ceasefire proposal. Which effectively a pause or a movement toward the end of the long war that has now lasted two years of conflict between Israel (and its allies) and Gaza. The war began at the start of 2023 and has taken a toll on so many lives and infrastructure. Mediators from Qatar and Egypt will bring the proposal to Hamas, offering hope to save lives and end the war.
The Ceasefire Proposal
President Trump made a series of social media posts and public comments saying that his team had a “long and productive” meeting about Gaza with Israeli officials. He did not name all of the officials, but reports stated that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance planned to meet with Ron Dermer, a senior advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump stated:

“My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today about Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalise the 60-Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War. I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”
He also added that mediators from Qatar and Egypt will deliver the ceasefire proposal to Hamas. To which he added, “The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring peace, will deliver this final proposal.”
Important Points of the Deal
- 60-Day Ceasefire is a deal that would last for two months, which means the war will be on hold, creating an opportunity for negotiations and an end to the long-affected war. This deal has given hope to the people that it will help to save lives, and ease the ongoing tension between Israel and Gaza.
- Qatar and Egypt will act as the mediators and are responsible for delivering the proposal to Hamas to de-escalate the conflict.
- The U.S. proposal supposedly consists of the release of half the hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and remains of others. The other hostage exchange would be part of a larger agreement for an end to the conflict.
- Israel insists that Hamas must disarm and dismantle for the war to end permanently. They have demanded this because Hamas has consistently rejected this condition so far.
Reactions and Hopes
In Gaza, where people are enduring constant airstrikes, ongoing displacement, and an imminent humanitarian crisis, the announcement has sparked cautious optimism. Even for the time being, many people find optimism in the truce.
The majority of the cabinet would favour an agreement that frees the other hostages, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who stated that he supports the arrangement. However, some of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s most ardent followers among his right-wing bloc continue to oppose a permanent truce.
In the United States, President Trump stated that he would be “very firm” with Netanyahu regarding the need for a ceasefire as soon as possible. He also believes negotiators can reach a deal as early as next week.
Challenges and Uncertainties
Serious concerns remain, even though there are some early signs that a possible agreement might be coming soon. Even though Hamas hasn’t officially responded to Trump’s comments, there are reports that its leaders are thinking about them and have asked for more information from people trying to help bring about a deal. There are still major differences. Israel says peace can only happen if Hamas stops using weapons, while Hamas wants the war to end and the hostages to be released. Also, the situation for people in Gaza is still very bad, no matter what happens with a stop to fighting. Since the conflict started in October 2023, local workers say over 56,000 Palestinians have died, many are suffering from hunger, and almost everyone in Gaza has had to leave their homes.
What’s Next
The ceasefire’s impact has sparked ongoing discussions and diplomatic meetings. Since the final proposal will be delivered by Egypt and Qatar, it remains to be seen what decision Hamas will take. The conflict and hostage negotiations will be a key topic of discussion between Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House Next Week. Though both leaders are expecting a peaceful negotiation during this difficult period. Words said by Trump often draw controversy, we will see whether this 60-day ceasefire represents a turning point in the decades of war or whether it will become just another missed opportunity.
